From his birth, Horatio Farnham Lewis dreamed of becoming a soldier, and pursued every opportunity to do so. As a seventeen-year-old living in Erie, Pennsylvania, he rushed to the Union’s defense in 1862, and surrendered his promising future to enlist in the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry. Surviving the carnage of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, he endured unimaginable loss, but never lost hope of Union victory. Horatio’s death at Gettysburg, when he was a mere eighteen years old, devastated his family, and marked the loss of far more than just a patriotic youth.
